Colorful Art Installation by Christopher Janney
Anyone familiar with my work knows that I create installations for hospitals and other healthcare-related facilities; so I’m always interested to follow what other artists are doing in these settings. Recently, I was particularly intrigued to learn about this colorful art installation by the Massachusetts-based artist Christopher Janney, which is slated to open this fall at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Titled Harmonic Grove, this piece isn’t only a soothing composition of blue and green glass tiles (although it is certainly that); it’s also an interactive music installation. The 4,000 square-foot canopy is supported by columns with “inviting handprints” embedded in them. When visitors press their hands against the prints, the lighting shifts and a series of melodic instruments are triggered, activating sound through 24 speakers.
Janney, who is both an architect and jazz musician, is known for playful projects that merge architecture, sound, light, and interactive technology. You can check out more of his work on his website here.
