Developing Textured Glass
Nature inspires concepts for many of my full glass art works; but it also influences my experiments in textured glass on a more minute level. Take the example above; the bottom image shows those beautiful Rhode Island wetlands, to which I’ve returned again and again for inspiration, and the top image is a detailed shot of glass that was created in response to those wetlands. I was drawn not only to the colors of the environment, but also to the wisps of breeze, the rustling of the plants, the ripples of the water, the reflections and patterns of the sun. I wanted to capture the feeling of the place not only through color, but also through the shapes and “movement” of the glass. The resulting glass might become part of a larger piece that is also directly inspired by nature, or offer nuance to an installation with a wholly different conceptual focus.
