Anyone familiar with my work knows that I create installations for hospitals and other healthcare-related facilities; so I’m always interested to follow what other artists are doing in these settings. Recently, I was particularly intrigued to learn about this colorful art installation by the Massachusetts-based artist Christopher Janney, which is slated to open this fall at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Shortly after finishing my last post about the differences between gallery work and public art, I stumbled upon this scathing critique of the state of contemporary public art, with a particular focus on work created through “1% for Art” programs across the United States.

Lately I’ve been thinking about the many complexities of public art; how the creation of public art differs from private studio practice; and how many people don’t realize there’s any distinction between gallery work versus public art. Isn’t art just art, whether it’s exhibited in a gallery or the lobby of City Hall?

This past month, I was interested to learn about Color Field, a new permanent glass public art installation at the Federal Center RTD light rail station in Lakewood, Colorado.

Last winter, I was honored to have this colorful glass facade concept selected as one of four proposals for a public art project at Long Island Rail Road’s Wyandanch Station. While the work ultimately went unrealized, it was an interesting design challenge and I can imagine adapting it for another use in the future.
