Visit My Kiln Cast Glass in Second Life

Kiln cast glass installation by Paul Housberg in Second Life

There’s something extremely surreal about realizing your art exists in the largest-ever 3D virtual world – despite the fact that you, technically, do not.

Continuing this theme of “When Art Takes On a Life of its Own” outside the studio, I recently discovered that my kiln cast glass installation at the University of Utah’s J. Willard Marriott Library is featured in Second Life! I’ve never played Second Life, and thus do not exist as a character there; but a colleague observed that the library has quite an active presence there, having “owned its own island” since 2007. Apparently its Second Life incarnation is a pretty fully functioning hub, where one can research any topic, attend classes, and even stroll through a virtual art gallery. The graphics for this virtual version have been designed in 3D based on images of the actual space, hence the presence of my piece.

Just before I stumbled over this wacky phenomenon, I was mulling whether or not to write a post on my process designing the Marriott Library installation. I think it has to happen now! Coming soon. Now, does anyone know how to share blog posts with the world of Second Life?
